What we do

FOPP recruits, organises and supports volunteers to help in Peterborough Prison.

We recruit volunteers from as wide a cross-section of the community as possible, and ensure that their individual skills and personalities are put to the best possible use.  FOPP employs a paid part-time Volunteer Coordinator who is responsible for the recruitment and day to day management of all our volunteers, and for liaising with the prison on all aspects of our activities.

Many of our volunteers assist in the secure areas of the prison, helping tutors deliver lessons to prisoners in the education departments.  Opportunities also exist to help in the prison libraries, assisting with the Storybooks scheme, coaching in the gymnasiums, and getting new mums in the Mother and Baby Unit involved in various activities.

FOPP also runs a Tea-Bar to provide refreshments to anyone coming to visit someone in the prison.

The sign shows our food hygiene rating is the highest: 5, Very Good.

We have a paid, part-time Tea-Bar Assistant who is responsible for the day to day running of this service, ordering new stock and checking the takings, and keeping a general eye on the waiting area (including the children’s play area) to make sure it is safe and effective for all users.  Closeup view of some of the children's play equipment in the Tea bar area.

Volunteers are essential for keeping the Tea-Bar open and running smoothly, particularly when the Tea-Bar Assistant is not on duty.
